When a heater is sized for a hot tub or a swimming pool, the most important question is how long will it take before we can get into a properly heated hot tub or pool. We don't want to wait too long. So all the sizing formulas are concerned with minimizing the time needed to heat the water. So maybe we want a heater that will heat the water 15 or 30 degrees per hour, so we only need to wait a few minutes before the hot tub is ready. This is not the case for a pond, in fact, too fast a temperature rise will stress out our Koi. What we want is enough heat to keep the temperature to our desired level, and then maintain it there by replacing the heat lost through the surface area evaporation and the walls and bottom of our pond. Contributing factors are the wind, air temperature, ground temperature, waterfalls, fountains, etc. A 1/10 or 1/2 degree increase per hour will do just fine. That's why typical hot tub experts will recommend an overkill of a 350,000 BTU heater instead of a 55,000 BTU heater. We don't want to cook our Koi, we just want to keep them cozy, comfortable and healthy. We are available to help you properly size your heater for your particular pond requirements. |
