The valve, which is included in the price has 7 positions:

Pressure Filtering
Cyclonic backwashing
Vacuum to waste
Recirculate when you Medicate
Rinse after backwashing and before filtering again
Winter to open the system
Closed to prevent water movement or siphoning

If you are using a pool type vacuum you want the valve on the waste position, since the fines from the bottom of the pond will otherwise go right through the filter and cloud your water.
